The Breakthrough
2019, oil, cast plaster, fabric on canvas, 20 x 24 x 4.5”.
Certain societal confines and limitations make it unbearable for me to breathe. Sometimes I yearn to break the unreasonable norms, such as sexist and class-defining dress codes, a need for women to be more polite and reserved than men, and stereotypes associated with being Korean. With this work, I represent such confining concepts by anonymous, cast white hands stretching fabric across my face, preventing me from emerging as a person.
